User-Information Leaflets in the Children’s Cosmetic Industry

The Growing Children’s Cosmetic Industry

Between the rise of social media, the increasing number of existing beauty brands and growing freedom of self-expression, it’s no surprise that the children’s cosmetic market is expected to witness exponential growth over the coming years.

As a matter of fact, a study conducted by Cosmetify surveyed 1,361 parents of daughters between the age of 5 and 16 living in Britain. The results of the study demonstrated that the average age of a child asking their parents to wear makeup for the first time was as young as six years old.

A further survey outlined by the Guardian found that by the age of 14, nine out of ten girls already regularly apply some type of eyeliner, mascara or lipstick. The same survey, which questioned 5,856 youngsters aged 7 to 19, also showed that semi-permanent products such as fake tans are already popular among girls aged between 11 and 12.

With well-established players such as Claire’s and LUSH already championing the children/preteen cosmetic market, other market leaders such as Sephora have also actively began altering their demographic toward the younger circles.

Outlining Potential Risks

With the beauty and personal care market set to generate a revenue of $646.20 billion USD in 2024, children’s makeup no longer seems to be about just borrowing mum’s lipstick and trying on high heels. It’s therefore more important to sell products with clear guidance and instructions for parents.

The Importance of User Information Leaflets

Whilst efficiently labelling any cosmetic product is a legal requirement in the UK, user information leaflets often only accompany cosmetics that are potentially hazardous if used incorrectly. User information leaflets are a great way of reinforcing and detailing information that cannot be comprehensively added to the packaging of a product. Such critical information may include application instructions, guiding illustrations, timings, dosage, side effects, ingredients, expiry dates, manufacturing details and various language options.

User information leaflets are not only here to protect the cosmetic customer, but also ensure that consumers can achieve the best results. As the cosmetic demographic broadens and the market becomes further saturated, more attention will be brought to the importance of adhering to user information leaflets.
